Hànyǔ Pīnyīn

Pīnyīn, or Hànyǔ Pīnyīn, is known as the romanised Chinese phonetics and it has the writing system created using the Latin alphabet. The phrase "Pīn Yīn" literally means "spelled sound". Learning Pīnyīn greatly improves one's Mandarin pronunciation. In this course, you will learn how to position of your tongue and your lips in order to achieve accurate pronunciation, as well as be able to speak with greater confidence at work with your colleagues and clients.

Course outline:

  • Vowels and consonants sounds
  • The four tones of Mandarin
  • Differentiation between the different projected sounds  (such as front nasal and back nasal sounds)
  • Application of Hànyǔ Pīnyīn in typing (Computer input methodology, searching on internet and dictionary)

Chinese Idioms Appreciation

Chinese idiom, also known as Chéngyǔ, is a type of traditional Chinese idiomatic expression, most of which consist of four characters. There are many wonderful stories behind them. Today, they are still used very frequently in daily speaking and writing in Chinese.

Course requirement: in order to fully understand the meaning of idioms, it is better for you to reach HSK level 5. Of course you can take this course as an enrichment lesson if you are really  interested in it, just let me know your Chinese level before we start, I will do the adjustment for you.

Course outline:

Chinese idioms will be introduced according to their features. Idioms include numbers, animals, and colours will be taught. Also, Chinese idioms for blessing will be taught. Stories and application will be two important parts of our lesson.

Classical Chinese Poetry Appreciation

Classical Chinese poetry is traditional Chinese poetry written in classical Chinese. There are many types but the most popular type is Shī () and Cí (词), especially Shī in Tang Dynasty (唐诗) and Cí  in Song Dynasty (宋词).  Chinese poetry is an important part in Chinese literature as its form and style has developed and changed along the historical change. Also poetries reflect the life and the thought of Chinese people so they are valuable historical resources. Studying Chinese poetries will help you to have further understanding of Chinese Culture. You will know why the moon held so important position among Chinese. And you will know the reason why we use lotus or bamboo to describe a person.
